Variable steering ratio control of steer-by-wire vehicle to improve handling performance

Abstract: To improve vehicle handling performance, a variable steering ratio characteristic for steer-by-wire system is designed. The steering ratio is adjusted by a compensating coefficient according to vehicle longitudinal speed and steering wheel angle. To evaluate the performance of vehicle with variable steering ratio, simulations are conducted based on an objective evaluation index, which consists of quadratic cost functions of vehicle lateral deviation, steering angular speed, vehicle lateral acceleration and rol… Show more

“…21 The front wheel angle δ f can be found by φ ′ 1 for a known equivalent steering wheel angle and thus equation ( 14) will be meaningless. At this point, the dynamic equations the vehicle considering the steering system in combination with equations ( 11), ( 15), (16), and (17) are as follows:…”

“…Electrohydraulic control steering systems typically have large output powers and fast response speeds, making them more suitable for applications in agricultural machinery [5][6][7] . Compared to other forms of electrohydraulic control steering systems, the hydraulic steer-by-wire system has more applicable advantages because it can change the steering ratio of its steering system [8][9][10][11][12] . A good steering system requires its control system to execute steering commands quickly and accurately, and requires a reasonable design of steering transmission mechanism parameters to reduce steering resistance torque and tire wear [13,14] .…”

“…The primary objective of these vehicles is to obtain control capabilities that are not mechanically related to the vehicle's engine, but are sensed through advanced devices and transmitted by electrical signals based on effective mechanisms [26]. Then, the accuracy, performance and efficiency of the machinery in these vehicles is directly related to the positioning systems on roads and tracks [16,22] where DC motors are often used in this case.…”
