Variable yields and the problem of nitrogen production

Abstract: Abstract. In this paper we study the effect of metal-dependent stellar models on chemical yields and in particular on the history of nitrogen and oxygen abundances. We find that N yield decreases with increasing metal content. This effect somewhat balances the growth of secondary enrichment in nitrogen and leads to a relation between oxygen and nitrogen in fair agreement with observational data for galactic H I! regions.
