Variant origin of the superior thyroid artery in a Kenyan population

Abstract: Variant anatomy of the superior thyroid artery is important during surgical procedures, interpretation of angiograms, and interventional radiography in the neck. Pattern of the variations shows population differences but there is no data from the Kenyan population. This study therefore investigated the variations in origin of the superior thyroid artery in a Kenyan population. Forty six necks (36 males and 10 females) from 46 cadavers of black Kenyans in Department of Human Anatomy University of Nairobi, Kenya… Show more

“…This difference could point to the ethnic variations that are also quoted by recent studies. [56] We found carotid bifurcation as the second most common site of origin of STA (21.5% on the right and 18.5% on the left side). In a study by Lucev et al ., the origin of STA from CCA bifurcation was found in 22.5% of cases.…”

“…As suggested by recent studies, ethnicity plays its part in variations of STA. [56] A thorough literature search yielded no angiographic studies of anatomic variation of STA in the Indian population.…”

“…Our findings that the 1) STA originates more frequently from the CCA on the left side only and 2) the OA frequently emerges caudal to the facial artery (bilaterally) is in disagreement with the majority of representations shown in commonly used human anatomy atlases. It is possible these discrepancies exist due to the populations studied (Gupta et al 2014, Ongeti andOgeng'o 2012). Recognition of the likelihood of these variations is an important step in reducing morbidity associated with surgical and radiological procedures of the neck.…”

“…The superior thyroid artery usually arises as the first branch of the external carotid artery, although it can arise from the common carotid artery or its bifurcation [1][2][3][4][5][6][7][8]. As it passes inferiorly the superior thyroid artery is accompanied by the external laryngeal nerve before coursing anteromedially towards the superior pole of the thyroid gland where it divides into anterior and posterior branches which run on the respective borders of the lateral lobe as far as the isthmus before anastomosing with branches of the inferior thyroid artery.…”
