Variation in coordinative property of two different N2O2 donor Schiff base ligands with nickel(II) and cobalt(III) ions: characterisation and single crystal structure elucidation

Abstract: A nickel(II) and a cobalt(III) complex of two different potentially tetradentate Schiff bases with different binding modes have been synthesised. The nickel(II) complex [NiL 1 ] Á CH 3 OH (1) was formed, on reacting the metal salt with a perfectly symmetrical N 2 O 2 tetradentate Schiff base ligand H 2 L 1 , which is the 1:2 condensation product of 1,3-diamino propane and 2-hydroxyacetophenone. The cobalt(III) complex [Co(HL 2 ) 3 ] Á (ClO 4 ) 3 Á H 2 O (2) was synthesised using an asymmetric N 2 O 2 tetradent… Show more

“…Especially derivatives of salicylaldehyde and diamine have been of greate interest. They act as tetra-dentate ligands and provide suitable coordination mode for transition metal ions, so that obtained complexes have great potential in catalysis and material chemistry [3]. Nickel complexes with tetra-dentate Schiff base ligands have been wildly investigated and several oxidation states for nickel have been reported in such complexes [4][5][6].…”

“…The magnetic moment of the Co(II) complexes exhibit at 2.81 BM [28] consistent with Square planar geometry Ni(II) complexes are square planar and diamagnetic in nature [29] while the magnetic moment of Cu(II) complex exhibited in the range 1.75 representing that copper has square planar geometry showing one unpaired electron [30,31].…”
