Variation in Neuromuscular Responses during Acute Whole-Body Vibration Exercise

Abstract: Motion artifacts should be removed from EMG data collected during WBV. We propose that neuromuscular responses during WBV may be modulated by leg muscle cocontraction as a postural control strategy and/or muscle tuning by the CNS intended to minimize soft-tissue vibration.

“…Whole 1 3 body vibration (WBV) platforms have been popular training devices in recreational and athletic training as well as for rehabilitation purposes (Cardinale and Bosco 2003;Cochrane and Stannard 2005;Cardinale and Lim 2003;Rees et al 2008). The acute and long-term effects of WBV training have been investigated by several authors (Abercromby et al 2007;Cochrane and Stannard 2005;de Ruiter et al 2003a;Rittweger et al 2000Rittweger et al , 2003Blottner et al 2006;de Ruiter et al 2003b;Kvorning et al 2006). Vibrating dumbbells (Bosco et al 1999), vibrating pulley-like devices (Issurin et al 1994;Issurin and Tenenbaum 1999), and vibrating barbells (Poston et al 2007) have been proposed for the upper limbs.…”

“…In some studies, these peaks have been interpreted as the result of motion artifacts (Abercromby et al 2007). These results were confirmed by other authors using dummy-like electrodes, i.e., electrodes placed on the patella (Fratini et al 2009).…”

“…In the past few years, WBV was proposed as a mild approach to counteract sarcopenia and osteoporosis in the elderly [54]. Standing on an oscillating platform determines an improved response of the leg and postural muscles through the so-called tonic vibration reflex [57]. This response might be the key to long-term functional and structural neuromuscular adaptations, demonstrated in several studies.…”

“…Myoelectrical activity measurements recorded via SEMG could be affected by motion artifacts (6,24,25). Such artifacts can be eliminated using appropriate series of notch filters and full-wave rectification without losing valuable information on the motor unit response to vibration in SEMG data (26).…”
