Variation in soil carbon stock and nutrient content in sand dunes after afforestation by Prosopis juliflora in the Khuzestan province (Iran)

Abstract: Prosopis juliflora is one of the suitable tree species used as vegetation cover for sand dunes fixation. The objectives of this study were to determine the effect of P. juliflora afforestation and its canopy coverage classes on soil carbon (C) stock and nutrient status in sand dunes after 22 years since afforestation. We hypothesized that increasing the canopy coverage would result in higher soil C stocks and nutrient content. We selected two 10-ha afforested sand dunes with 25-50% and more than 75% canopy cov… Show more

“…Another point to keep in mind is the soil class, Neosols, which has low clay content and no iron or aluminum oxides. According to [38], low clay soils have low chemical and physical protection capacity of its organic matter due to a lack of organic complex formations. Therefore, we believe that the median values <10 Mg ha −1 in both, STK.TOC and STK.TN in each land use ( Figure 6, Table 2) are due to the soil class-Neosols.…”

“…Several authors studied the influence of mesquite trees on soil properties [9][10][11][12]. Nonetheless, such an effect was linked to other relevant factors, including climate, soil properties, canopy density, and plant coverage [13]. For instance, Tiedemann and Klemmedson [10] and Deans et al [14] stated that surface soils under crowns of Prosopis spp.…”

“…Overstory canopy cover is an important ecological characteristic of Zagros oak forests, which was significantly reduced in disturbed areas (Heydari et al, 2014). Previous studies indicated that canopy cover controls the biological, physical, and chemical soil properties as well as the herbaceous coverage, which in turn, influences the seedling recruitment and development (Caldeira et al, 2014;Moradi et al, 2017).…”
