Termites are social insects that live in colonies underground. Termites feed on a wide range of plants found within diverse habitats of Luanda sub County. This study aimed at assessing feed preference of edible termites and analyzing their phytochemical composition. In this study, termites were exposed to ten different test plants in their natural habitats to assess feed preference. The test plants were Grevillea robusta, Sugarcane, maize, Blue citronella grass, Eucalyptus, Mango, Avocado, Neem, Bamboo and a mixture of all the ten plants. Small pits were dug in the ground where the ten treatments were placed and replicated four times each. The test plants were placed in the evening then covered with soil block. The number of termites feeding on the test plants was counted after 12 hours the following day. There were separate trials for crushed and uncrushed feed substrates. The feed substrates that showed high feed preference were selected for phytochemical analysis. The plants whose crude extract was obtained were Grevillea robusta, Bamboo, Eucalyptus, Cypress, Maize and Sugarcane. This study has revealed that crushed feed substrates had a high level of feed preference by termites p<0.05. The mixture of all the feed substrates also showed high termite preference and a mean and SE of 676.500±41.7a. Phytochemical analysis of the crude plant extracts revealed that Eucalyptus had the highest number of phytochemicals present 9 out of 12. The identified phytochemicals were Saponins, Tannins, Alkaloids, Resins, Cardiac Glycosides, carbohydrates, phenols and flavones.

I. Background: Plant phenotyping has been a bottleneck for selecting insect-resistant plants in breeding programs. Our objectives were to: use text-mining tools to investigate state of the art about Leptocybe invasa in Eucalyptus; identify associated molecular interactions involving genes as a candidate and their impact and associated metabolites pathways and determine how products are currently used to control this insect as patents. II. Methods and Results: The literature survey was explored by title, abstract, and keywords of scientific articles, a database of genes and protein sequences, and patents. Nucleotide and protein sequences were mined in public banks. In the literature, we searched for homology to known genes or predicted proteins with sequences described in Eucalyptus sp. To obtain a broad set of studies, we accessed literature data of the last 20 years conducted with combinations of search terms “Leptocybe invasa” OR “eucalyptus gall wasp” AND “control”. Patents were prospected and analyzed using Orbit Intelligence patent research software III. Conclusions: Succinct interpretation of results as well as significance of findings. Statement There are perspectives to access the genotype resistance; furthermore, it is critical managing the evaluable information as state of the art to overcome the damages of L. invasa beyond the genotype selection. The target genes found in this research can serve as a basis for further functional characterizations of Eucalyptus genes possibly related to response expression to L. invasa.

Termites are one of the major pests of wood and the use of synthetic insecticides in the control constitutes a major challenge to environmental health. This study assessed the level of damage on the wood of four Eucalyptus species on exposure to subterranean termites using preference and non preference tests in the eld; and the e cacy of different plant oils to protect wood damage. Physical properties responsible for wood resistance were determined using standard procedures. Pearson correlation, Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) and Tukey's Honestly Signi cant Difference (p < 0.05) were used for data analysis. The results showed that the highest and lowest wood damages were recorded in Eucalyptus tereticornis and Eucalyptus cloeziana, respectively throughout the period of observation in Samaru-Zaria and Afaka, Kaduna. The results also showed that wood of E. cloeziana was harder than that of E. tereticornis; and correlated signi cantly with the percentage wood loss. Solignum, a synthetic wood protectant, reduced wood loss to termite infestation more than the plant oils. Oil extracts from neem seed, Jatropha seed and palm kernel signi cantly reduced wood loss than in the control treatment. However, the potency of these plant oils reduced with time. The wood of E. cloeziana demonstrated high level of resistance against termite infestation; and neem oil, Jatropha oil and palm kernel oils can be used as wood protectants as alternatives to synthetic wood preservatives.
