Variation in Susceptibility to Avian Sarcoma Viruses and Expression of Endogenous Avian Leukosis Virus Antigens in Specific Pathogen-free Chicken Lines

Abstract: SUMMARYFive lines of chickens maintained as specific pathogen-free flocks in Australia were characterized in relation to endogenous antigens and endogenous avian leukosis virus expression. Embryos of line N were predominantly of C/E phenotype, uniformly positive for group-specific antigen and chick helper factor (gs+chf +) and 38~ expressed endogenous virus at a very low titre. Embryos of line M4 were uniformly of C/ABE phenotype and were either gs+chf + or gs-chf +. Line W19 embryos segregated for susceptibil… Show more

“…All viruses were obtained from the Houghton Poultry Research Station, Houghton, U.K. RAV-0 was collected from cultures of line 100 CEF (Crittenden et al, 1979b). The 16Q continuous line of quail cells, which produces envelope-defective RSV particles RSV(-) (Murphy, 1977), was obtained from Dr P. K. Vogt, University of Southern California, Los Angeles, Ca., U.S.A. Methods for culturing cells and propagation of viruses have been described (Ignjatovic & Bagust, 1985).…”

“…Chickens were obtained from the $2 flock, maintained as a specific pathogen-free flock at CSIRO SPF Unit, Maribyrnong. The S chickens are White Leghorns uniformly susceptible to ALV of subgroups A, B, C and D and segregated for susceptibility to subgroup E viruses (Ignjatovic & Bagust, 1985). In 1984, only chickens of the C/0 gs-chf-phenotype were selected and bred to establish the $2 flock which produces embryos uniformly of C/0 gs-chf-phenotype, which support replication of endogenous viruses to a high titre.…”
