Variation in Volatile Leaf Oils of Twelve Eucalyptus Species Harvested from Hajeb Layoun Arboreta (Tunisia)

Abstract: Hydrodistillation of the dried leaves of twelve species of the genus Eucalyptus L' Hér., i.e., E. brockwayi C. A. Gardn., E. gracilis F. Muell., E. gillii Maiden, E. largiflorens F. Muell., E. loxophleba Benth., E. occidentalis Endl., E. oldfieldii F. Muell., E. salmonophloia F. Muell., E. sargentii Maiden, E. stricklandii Maiden, E. torquata Luehm., and E. woodwardii Maiden, harvested from Hajeb Layoun arboreta (region of Kairouan, central Tunisia) in January 2005, afforded essential oils in yields varying fr… Show more

“…The oil collected from each plant was dried (Na2SO4) and stored at 4°C until analysis. The yield of essential oil was expressed in % (v/w) of the dry material (Elaissi et al, 2010a;Elaissi et al, 2010b).…”

“…Eucalyptus essential oil was also reported as an effective anti-inflammatory, analgesic, antioxidant, antimutagenic, insecticide, nematocide and acaricide oil (Batish et al, 2008;Bugarin et al, 2014;Rossi & Palacios, 2015).The Eucalyptus essential oils can be obtained by different methods, such as hydrodistillation, supercritical CO2 extraction, microwave-assisted extraction, and vacuum extraction by solvents. These methods affect the final yield of the oil and it varied from 0.1± 0.1 to 5.7±0.5 7% (Elaissi et al, 2010a;Elaissi et al, 2010b). High levels of 1,8-cineole (87.8%) were found for the majority of the Eucalyptus species (Zrira et al, 2004;Elaissi et al, 2010c).…”

“…They were used essentially as a fire wood, for the production of mine wood, and in the fight against erosion [14]. In our previous investigations on the essential oils of Eucalyptus species grown in Tunisia, we have characterized the leaf essential oil of seven [15] and twelve species [16] from Hajeb Layoun arboreta (region of Kairouan, center of Tunisia). Here, we report the results of our research on the variability of the leaf essential oils of eleven Eucalyptus species collected from Korbous arboreta (region of Nabeul, north east of Tunisia).…”

“…This multivariate method has been extensively employed for studies on food volatiles (Jabalpurwala et al, 2009;Elaissi et al, 2010;Giri et al, 2010;Mildner-Szkudlarz & Jelen;Zhang et al, 2010). But regarding to insects, PCA has been employed only to study the volatiles of Hymenopteran species (Steiner et al, 2007;Coppee et al, 2008).…”
