Variation of Aerosol Optical Depth Measured by Sun Photometer at a Rural Site near Beijing during the 2017–2019 Period

Abstract: In recent years, the Beijing–Tianjin–Hebei region has become one of the worst areas for haze pollution in China. Sun photometers are widely used for aerosol optical property monitoring due to the advantages of fully automatic acquisition, simple maintenance, standardization of data processing, and low uncertainty. Research sites are mostly concentrated in cities, while the long-term analysis of aerosol optical depth (AOD) for the pollution transmission channel in rural Beijing is still lacking. Here, we obtain… Show more

“…Figure 10 shows the total AOT derived from the sunphotometer without corrections. Since the AOT is a dimensionless parameter with a maximum of 1, the results are inconsistent with the general values, especially for the blue band with a wavelength of 368 nm (Cerqueira et al, 2014;Wu et al, 2022). Although only one wavelength declines from the general result, the three wavelengths (500, 675, 778 nm) are similar trends.…”

“…The air mass in this present study is estimated using the time series of the solar zenith angle. Besides, the general method to derive original AOT from the sun-photometer data was usually only corrected using the sky-radiometer using loss correction Nelli et al, 2021;Evgenieva et al, 2022;Wu et al, 2022). The new method problem is challenging to implement in the location without the sky-radiometer instruments' support.…”
