Variation of bioactive secondary metabolites in Ceylon cinnamon (<em>Cinnamomum zeylanicum</em> Blume) in different climatic conditions, maturity status and propagation types

Abstract: This paper presents the variation of phytochemical quantities of leaves and bark of Cinnamomum zeylanicum Blume (Ceylon cinnamon) under different conditions such as ecological variation, maturity and physical state of the tree, and the propagation type. Among 49 climatic zones in Sri Lanka, six cinnamon growing zones including three wet zones (WL 1a, WL 2a, and WU 2b), two intermediate zones (IL 1a, IL 1b) and one dry zone (DL5) were selected for collecting cinnamon leaves and bark samples. The quantities of p… Show more

“…The impact of environmental factors, propagation method, age, and the plant's physical state (flowering, etc.) on phytochemicals has been reported [ 44 ]. With the seeding type of propagation (Sri Gamunu), a plant grown in a wet climate that is 3 -5 years old and harvested during flowering time contains a high phytochemical content.…”

“…With the seeding type of propagation (Sri Gamunu), a plant grown in a wet climate that is 3 -5 years old and harvested during flowering time contains a high phytochemical content. While with the vegetative type of propagation (Sri Wijaya), > 5-year-old bark had a greater yield of phytochemicals [ 44 ]. A study conducted on two accessions of C. zeylanicum, namely, Sri Gamunu and Sri Vijaya, revealed a difference in the composition of the bark oil.…”
