Variation of Photosynthetic Induction in Major Horticultural Crops Is Mostly Driven by Differences in Stomatal Traits

Abstract: Under natural conditions, irradiance frequently fluctuates, causing net photosynthesis rate (A) to respond slowly and reducing the yields. We quantified the genotypic variation of photosynthetic induction in 19 genotypes among the following six horticultural crops: basil, chrysanthemum, cucumber, lettuce, tomato, and rose. Kinetics of photosynthetic induction and the stomatal opening were measured by exposing shade-adapted leaves (50 μmol m–2 s–1) to a high irradiance (1000 μmol m–2 s–1) until A reached a stea… Show more

“…Taken together, CO 2 supply may be more dominant than CO 2 fixation to explain the differences in photosynthetic induction in ARC 11094, Takanari, and Koshihikari. These results are consistent with those of De Souza et al (2020), Eyland et al (2021) and Zhang et al (2022).…”

“…Stomata serve as an important channel for water and gas exchange between plants and the external environment [ 51 ]. Existing literature has documented that stomatal conductance was associated with stomata size, pore area and stomatal density [ 52 ], which was consistent with the results of our study (Table 1 ).…”

“…thickness × density × specific heat capacity, k ) and boundary layer conductance to heat transfer ( g bh ). We also made the reasonable assumption that the increase in T leaf is not driven by biological responses (especially in dark‐adapted plants), such as changes in stomatal aperture, which can take several minutes of illumination to initiate (Vico et al ., 2011; McAusland et al ., 2016; Zhang et al ., 2022). After applying the light pulse, we assume that the relatively slower decrease of T leaf depends mainly on k and g bh , providing temperature kinetic data with and without the influence of irradiance.…”
