Varicosities of the lower extremity, new approaches: cosmetic or therapeutic needs?

Abstract: Varicose veins of the lower extremity (VVLE) are a frequently encountered vascular disorder in the general population. The general view that VVLE are a non-serious disease with primarily aesthetic impact is a common misconception, as the disease can have a significant negative impact on generic and disease-specific quality of life. Further, VVLE may be associated with potentially threatening clinical conditions, such as chronic venous ulceration, venous thromboembolism and haemorrhage from ruptured varicose ve… Show more

“…Varicose veins are a widespread vascular pathology characterized by the enlargement and twisting of superficial veins, primarily affecting the lower extremities 1 . Traditionally perceived as a mere aesthetic concern, varicose veins are indicative of a more profound venous dysfunction, potentially escalating to symptomatic discomfort, edema, and, in severe instances, the formation of chronic wounds or venous ulcers 2–5 . These ulcers, predominantly located in the lower leg, constitute one of the gravest consequences of varicose veins, significantly contributing to morbidity and the strain on healthcare systems 6 .…”

“…Varicose veins of the lower extremity (VVLEs) are a widespread clinical condition, with prevalence rates spanning from 14 to 64% across the general population. The more advanced stages of VVLEs impact an estimated 3.3% to 9.6% of individuals 1 , 2 . This condition is characterized by a range of symptoms, including leg pain, swelling, itching, fatigue, and, in more severe cases, changes in skin and soft tissue such as pigmentation, eczema, skin hardening, and ulceration.…”
