 Electricity generation pose an impact on the environment.  The use of fossils for electricity generation contributes to GHG emissions.  Reducing GHG emissions requires a shift to electricity generation from renewables.  Climate change can affect the efficiency of renewable electricity generation.  Renewable electricity generated synthetic fuels can be used during harsh conditions.Human actions such as electricity generation are contributory causes of climate change. In a quest to reduce the emission of greenhouse gases associated with electricity generation from fossil fuels, the world is turning to renewables. Renewable sources, however, also do have an impact on the environment. Likewise, renewable electricity generation is also dependent on the climate. Hydro, Wind, and Solar are the popular renewable energy sources for the generation of electricity. This work reviews the impact of these renewables in electricity generation on the environment. It also considers the effect of climate change on its use. The construction of renewable electricity generating plants leads to habitat disruptions and can also cause fatalities. Climate change weighs an enormous impact on the performance of renewable electricity generating plants. The recent blackout experienced in Texas as a result of the cold weather is a good example. The end of extreme weather conditions is not yet, and the need to start preparing to prevent a blackout re-occurrence. A possible solution for sustainable renewable electricity generation in extreme weather conditions lies in synthetic fuel availability.

Strategic Modulation of Thermal to Electrical Energy Ratio Produced From Pv/T Module

Several strategies have been developed to enhance the performance of a solar photovoltaicthermal (PV/T) system in buildings. However, these systems are limited by the cost, complex structure and power consumed by the pump. This paper proposes an optimisation method conversion strategy that modulates the ratio of thermal to electrical energy from the photovoltaic (PV) cell, to increase the PV/T system’s performance. The design and modelling of a PV cell was developed in MATLAB/Simulink to validate the heat transfer occurring in the PV cell model, which converts the radiation (solar) into heat and electricity. A linear regression equation curve was used to define the ratio of thermal to electrical energy technique, and the behavioural patterns of various types of power (thermal and electrical) as a function of extrinsic cell resistance (Rse). The simulation results show an effective balance of the thermal and electrical power when adjusting the Rse. The strategy to modulate the ratio of thermal to electrical energy from the PV cell may optimise the PV/T system’s performance. A change of Rse might be an effective method of controlling the amount of thermal and electrical energy from the PV cell to support the PV/T system temporally, based on the energy need. The optimisation technique of the PV/T system using the PV cell is particularly useful for households since they require electricity, heating, and cooling. Applying this technique demonstrates the ability of the PV/T system to balance the energy ( thermal and electrical) produced based on the weather conditions and the user’s energy demands.

Final Pass Rate Fluctuations of Power Engineering Students May Be Related to Load Shedding, and not Load Shifting

Power engineering students need to register for and successfully complete a capstone module within the Baccalaureus Technologiae qualification in Electrical Engineering in South Africa. These students need to submit six different assignments over a period of 10 months, comprising a proposal, a progress report, a poster, a power point presentation, a conference paper and a final report. However, it has been observed that the final grades of working students have fluctuated dramatically over the past three years, leading to the following research question “What may be contributing to these fluctuations?” The purpose of this paper is to discuss the fluctuations and provide possible reasons for them based on literature applicable to this field. An exploratory case study is used to provide quantitative data of the student final grades from 2014 – 2016. Results show that the pass rate varied from 71% to 77% to 56%. Furthermore, some 18 students submitted their proposal in 2016, but never submitted the other five assignments. This concern may be related to load shedding by both students and academics, rather than load shifting. A key recommendation of this research is to share its findings with top management of student employers and the university, thereby hoping to create awareness of the importance of lightening the workloads of employed students andacademics during important submission periods of capstone modules.
