Vascular plants, coastal dunes between Pehuen-có and Monte Hermoso, Buenos Aires, Argentina

Abstract: Buenos Aires coastal dune systems undergo an accelerated process of human induced modification, causing loss of native plant species and changes in species composition, cover and/or abundance. We present a species list of vascular plants recorded in a region of dune landscape between Pehuen-có and Monte Hermoso localities, southern Buenos Aires Atlantic coast. The area comprises fixed and active dune systems, frontal dunes, sandy marine beach and an abrasion platform. Vegetation sampling was performed using li… Show more

“…During the present study Poaceae, Malvaceae, Asteraceae, Euphorbiaceae, Cyperaceae were the most common families. Many authors have mentioned that in various parts of the world many dune ecosystems support high plant richness and diversity values (Musila et al 2001;Grootjans et al 2004;Fontana 2005;Celsi & Monserrat 2008). The present study also indicates that We also compared the floristic composition of the two coastal sites, Manapadu and Kulasakarapattanam.…”

“…There are active dunes with little or no vegetation cover, and semi‐fixed and fixed dunes where the vegetation has stabilized. In addition, there are interdune depressions in the area, which are associated with plant species tolerant to flooded environments (Celsi & Monserrat, 2008).…”

“…Studies in this landscape have highlighted anthropization's adverse effects on biodiversity, from native species abundance declines to species population isolation due to habitat availability reduction (Alberio & Comparatore, 2014; Austrich, Mora, Mapelli, Fameli, et al., 2020; Block et al., 2016). Thus, protecting these coastal dune habitats is vital for the long‐term viability of many species in this unique natural ecosystem (Celsi & Monserrat, 2008).…”

“…Pehuen Co is a small town (about 700 residents) known as "a forest beside the sea". It is a low density eco-tourism site with a fully preserved forested design of unpaved street and low houses (Celsi and Monserrat, 2008;Rojas et al, 2014). According to the surveys conducted by the Office of Tourism of Coronel Rosales, "pursuing peace and nature" is the main motivation of beach visitors.…”

“…a "business as usual" scenario. There is an increasing need to address integrated coastal and beach management in Monte Hermoso and Pehuen Co, because the main source of income and economy of those areas is based on "sun and beach" tourism (Celsi and Monserrat, 2008;Fiori et al, 2004;London et al, 2013;Vaquero and Pascale, 2003).…”
