Vascular plants from some localities in the western and northern parts of the Canadian Arctic Archipelago

Abstract: The paper lists 123 species of vascular plants from several areas hitherto not investigated botanically: Masik River Valley, Banks Island; Eglinton Island; Fitzwilliam Owen Island; and Good Friday Bay, Axel Heiberg Island. Also, collections are listed from Meighen Island and from the vicinity of Eureka, Axel Heiberg Island, both areas where botanical work has been carried out earlier.

“…Species such as Crepis nana (Herbarium accession numbers 496101,502460 and 502552), Petasites frigidus, and Senecio congestus (Fig. 17g) occur only on southeastern Prince Patrick Island and warm areas of western Melville Island (Kuc, 1970;Porsild and Cody, 1980;Edlund, 1986a). Other Compositae show the dual disjunct distribution similar to that of Salix Polaris, occurring only in zone 4 on both Melville Island and in the intermontane area.…”

“…Larix wood is common at Worth Point where KUC (1974) reported stumps of Larix laricina up to 26 cm in diameter. They possess extremely narrow growth rings, which probably means that the trees were growing near treeline.…”

“…at WP are unusually well preserved considering that they are likely older than 730 ka. For example, KUC (1974) recorded several species of foliose lichens and many of the higher plant fossils retain leaves, buds and flower parts. The few insect fossils from samples studied by Kuc are also exceptionally well preserved.…”
