Vasopressin-independent mechanisms in controlling water homeostasis

Abstract: The maintenance of body water homeostasis depends on the balance between water intake and water excretion. In the kidney, vasopressin (Vp) is a critical regulator of water homeostasis by controlling the insertion of aquaporin 2 (AQP2) onto the apical membrane of the collecting duct principal cells in the short term and regulating the gene expression of AQP2 in the long term. A growing body of evidence from both in vitro and in vivo studies demonstrated that both secretin and oxytocin are involved as Vp-indepen… Show more

“…Suggested by its newly discovered role in water homeostasis in mammals [48], [49], it is possible that the occurrence of SCTR in the Sarcopterygii lineage prior the emergence of tetrapods was used for the change from aquatic to terrestrial habitat. Due to its origin, the lfSCTR is still able to interact with and be activated by VIP and PACAP, possibly by retaining the VIP/PACAP recognition motifs (e.g.…”

“…AVP regulates aquaporins in the nephron, with aquaporin‐2 particularly important to renal tubule water reabsorption. Aquaporin‐2 is also influenced by secretin and oxytocin [22,23].…”

“…For example, oxytocin, a neuropeptide that regulates social behaviors (Lukas and Neumann, 2013; Stoesz et al, 2013; Feldman et al, 2015), couples to both the cAMP and cGMP cascades (Cheng et al, 2009; Viero et al, 2010). Further, cAMP-response element binding protein (CREB) and exchange protein activated by cAMP (Epac) are required for various types of social behaviors (Bickle, 2008; Srivastava et al, 2012; Yang et al, 2012).…”
