The metabolic syndrome (MetS) is a cluster of multiple conditions that includes hypertension, dyslipidemia, abdominal obesity, and hyperglycemia disorders. Most studies revealed that the MetS is accompanied with an increased risk for cardiovascular disease, Type 2 diabetes mellitus, and insulin resistance. It can be said that, in treating or preventing the MetS and its components, lifestyle adjustment and weight loss have a vital role. According to various studies, among natural compounds, celery (Apium graveolens) is one of the most important sources of phytochemicals such as phenolic acids, flavones, flavonols, and antioxidants such as vitamin C, beta‐carotene (Provitamin A), and manganese. These antioxidants have a role in decreasing the oxidative damage. The phytochemicals in celery decrease the activity of proinflammatory cytokines and prevent inflammation. Also, flavonoids in celery suppress cardiovascular inflammation. Oxidative stress and inflammation in the blood stream are the main risk factors in increasing cardiovascular disease, especially atherosclerosis. Celery phthalides leads to expanding of smooth muscle in the blood vessels and lower blood pressure. As a result, the most active ingredients in celery (A. graveolens (have shown hypolipidemic, antidiabetic, and hypotensive properties. In this review, we summarized the mechanisms underlying the protective effects of celery components on insulin action, glucose, lipid metabolism, and blood pressure.

The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of crateagus flavonoid extract in preventing pulmonary hypertension syndrome (PHS) in broiler chickens reared at high altitude, encountered ascites was evaluated. A 225 day-old broiler chickens (Ross-308) were randomly assigned to three treatments including different drinking levels of crateagus flavonoid extract (0, 0.1, and 0.2 mL per liter of drinking water) in a 42-day trial. Body weight gain were increased and feed conversion ratio were decreased significantly (P<0.05) when crateagus flavonoid extract was consumed by broiler chickens at levels of 0.1 and 0.2 mL per liter of drinking water in the both starting and growing stages, and throughout the trial. Overexpression of inducible nitric-oxide synthase in the heart was observed in chickens consumed different levels of crateagus flavonoid extract. Birds received crateagus flavonoid extract at levels of 0.1 and 0.2 mL had significantly (P<0.05) higher circulatory concentrations of nitric oxide but significantly (P<0.05) lower serum malondialdehyde concentration, hematocrit and heterophil to lymphocyte ratio compared to control group. Consuming crateagus flavonoid extract at levels of 0.1 and 0.2 mL reduced incidence of right ventricular hypertrophy and led to a significant decline in mortality from PHS. It was concluded that crateagus flavonoid extract is an effective medicinal plant derivative to prevent PHS and ascites in broiler chickens by lowering pulmonary blood pressure and increasing serum antioxidant capacities.

Testicular Caspase-3 and β-Catenin Regulators Predicted via Comparative Metabolomics and Docking Studies

Many routes have been explored to search for effective, safe, and affordable alternatives to hazardous female contraceptives. Herbal extracts and their secondary metabolites are some of the interesting research areas to address this growing issue. This study aims to investigate the effects of ten different plant extracts on testicular spermatogenesis. The correlation between the chemical profile of these extracts and their in vivo effect on male reproductive system was evaluated using various techniques. Approximately 10% of LD50 of hydro-methanolic extracts were orally administrated to rats for 60 days. Semen parameters, sexual organ weights, and serum levels of male sex hormones in addition to testes histopathology, were evaluated. Moreover, metabolomic analysis using (LC-HRESIMS), multivariate analysis (PCA), immunohistochemistry (caspase-3 and β-catenin), and a docking study were performed. Results indicated that three plant extracts significantly decreased epididymal sperm density and motility. Moreover, their effects on testicular cells were also assured by histopathological evaluations. Metabolomic profiling of the bioactive plant extracts showed the presence of diverse phytochemicals, mostly oleanane saponins, phenolic diterpenes, and lupane triterpenes. A docking study on caspase-3 enzyme showed that oleanane saponins possessed the highest binding affinity. An immunohistochemistry assay on β-catenin and caspase-3 indicated that Albizzia lebbeck was the most active extract for decreasing immunoexpression of β-catenin, while Rosmarinus officinalis showed the highest activity for increasing immunoexpression of caspase-3. The spermatogenesis decreasing the activity of A. lebbeck, Anagallis arvensis, and R. officinalis can be mediated via up-regulation of caspase-3 and down-regulation of β-catenin existing in testis cells.
