Vector control programs in Saint Johns County, Florida and Guayas, Ecuador: successes and barriers to integrated vector management

Abstract: BackgroundVector-borne diseases (VBDs) and mosquito control programs (MCPs) diverge in settings and countries, and lead control specialists need to be aware of the most effective control strategies. Integrated Vector Management (IVM) strategies, once implemented in MCPs, aim to reduce cost and optimize protection of the populations against VBDs. This study presents a strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats (SWOT) analysis to compare IVM strategies used by MCPs in Saint Johns County, Florida and Guaya… Show more

“…When the process of oviposition is inhibited, the population of mosquitoes will be reduced and thereby the probability of getting infected with mosquito-borne disease will be reduced. Hence, nowadays, research on oviposition has become the focus in the concept of integrated vector control management [9,10].…”

“…Handheld foggers are easy-to-carry equipment that produce visible plumes, which indicate they are working, and they can be used as area "spot" treatments during daylight hours (WHO 2003;Xue et al 2013aXue et al , 2013b. Both the daytime occurrence of fogging and the visible plume could provide valuable opportunities for education of homeowners on prevention and control methods for mosquitoes (Naranjo et al 2014).…”

“…Given the time frame of clinical illness, infections malaria, chikungunya and Zika were unlikely. The first cases of chikungunya were identified in Machala 2015 and the first cases of ZIKV in 2016; no autochthonous malaria cases were reported from 2012-2017 (40). It is likely that the outbreak of chikungunya superseded dengue infections in 2015.…”
