Vector mesons in medium and dileptons in heavy-ion collisions

Abstract: Theoretical approaches to assess modifications of vector mesons in the medium, as well as their experimental identification via electromagnetic probes, are discussed. Implications for the nature of chiral symmetry restoration in hot/dense matter are outlined and put into context with the axialvector channel.

“…Among these, the ρ(770 MeV/c 2 ) is the most important, due to its strong coupling to the ππ channel and its short lifetime of only 1.3 fm/c. Changes both in width and in mass were originally suggested as precursor signatures of the chiral transition [1] and subsequent models have tied these changes directly [2] or indirectly [3] to chiral symmetry restoration.…”

“…In the low invariant mass region which is dominated by lepton pairs produced during the later stages of the collision, dilepton emission takes place due to the decay of vector mesons. Consequently, the spectral properties of vector mesons, the ρ meson in particular has been a subject of intense discussion [7,4,2,8]. We find that it is only for the π − π loop that one calculates the thermal self-energy loop for the vector mesons directly.…”

“…Especially their decay to dileptons is presently investigated in elementary and complex (nucleus-nucleus) collisions in different laboratories all over the world (cf. the reviews [1,2,3] and Refs. therein).…”
