Vector polarons in a degenerate electron system

Abstract: We consider a one dimensional model of an electron in a doubly (or nearly) degenerate band that interacts with elastic distortions. We show that the electron equations of motion reduce to a set of coupled non-linear Schrödinger equations. For the case of interband electron-phonon coupling stemming from local Jahn-Teller interactions, new multicomponent self-localized polaron solutions -vector polarons-are described and classified. The phase diagram for the different types of vector polarons in this model is pr… Show more

“…Atomic units (@ m e 1) are used throughout. This is a continuum version of the pseudo-Jahn-Teller model with local symmetry A E , and it is similar to a recently studied continuum model that was shown to contain new kinds of multiorbital polarons (''vector polarons'') [8] that feature spatial variations of the vibronic mixing. It is demonstrated here using a variational argument that the model of Eq.…”

“…Using a semi-classical continuum model of an electron in a deformable molecular crystal, the effects of electronic and vibrational degeneracy (and near degeneracy) on polaron structure have been investigated. With the inclusion of local Jahn-Teller couplings within the degenerate manifolds, a multicomponent polaron emerges as a solution of the semiclassical equations of motion [2].…”
