Vegan Diet and Bone Health—Results from the Cross-Sectional RBVD Study

Abstract: Scientific evidence suggests that a vegan diet might be associated with impaired bone health. Therefore, a cross-sectional study (n = 36 vegans, n = 36 omnivores) was used to investigate the associations of veganism with calcaneal quantitative ultrasound (QUS) measurements, along with the investigation of differences in the concentrations of nutrition- and bone-related biomarkers between vegans and omnivores. This study revealed lower levels in the QUS parameters in vegans compared to omnivores, e.g., broadban… Show more

“…The vegan diets in our case study were the lowest in calcium and the Vegan-New diet was lowest in zinc. These findings are in agreement with a recent cross-sectional comparison that found poorer bone health in vegans compared to omnivores, as well as lower nutritional biomarkers including calcium and zinc [ 46 ]. Recent evidence has shown an acceleration of bone turnover when shifting from animal- to plant-based diets [ 47 ].…”

“…are not consumed. Additional expenses for supplements (e.g., vitamin B 12 and D) need to be considered [32][33][34] Isolated carbohydrates are apparently the cheapest nutrients. Diets with carbohydrate restriction-including the Mediterranean diet-may be very effective for metabolic amelioration, but require a substantially higher household budget for food.…”

“…Achieving dietary recommendations when undergoing a vegan diet is almost impossible if highly processed protein-rich plant foods (tofu, seitan…) are not consumed. Additional expenses for supplements (e.g., vitamin B 12 and D) need to be considered [ 32 , 33 , 34 ]…”
