Objective: to know the medicinal plants used in self-care by people with cancer in palliative care. Method: this is a qualitative study, of the exploratory and descriptive type. The research was conducted in Pelotas, Rio Grande do Sul, in the participants' homes. Data collection was conducted between June and September 2018. The study participants were people with cancer in palliative care followed-up by the Program of Interdisciplinary Home Hospitalization, in use of medicinal plants. They totaled 20 participants, with 14 having the presence of the caregiver during the interview; she occasionally encouraged them to answer the questions. Results: it was identified that people with cancer in palliative care already used medicinal plants before the illness and continued using them in a search for therapeutic action, both for reducing symptoms caused by late-stage of the disease and for curing cancer. The knowledge of medicinal plants, most of the times, was passed from generation to generation or by friends and, generally, the use of plants is not informed to the health care professionals. Conclusion: the research produced a recovery of the popular knowledge of the species used in palliative care by people with cancer, promoting the comprehension of their habits regarding the use of the plants. Accordingly, the expansion of pharmacological studies related to the plants used for the treatment of signs and symptoms of cancer is essential.

Tagetes patula, known as French Marigold, belongs to the family Asteraceae. Human papillomavirus infection is considered one of the causes of cervical cancer. This study assessedthe cytotoxic activity and intracellular oxidative capacity of compounds isolated from extract of T. patulaflowers as anti-cancer cervical agents. Fraction F6 of n-butanol extract was subjected to column chromatography and HPLC-ESI-MS. The isolated compounds of T. patulawere used to examine cytotoxic activity and the production of total reactive oxygen species in SiHa and HeLa cells; the cells were also characterized using scanning electron microscopy. Patulitrin was cytotoxic to SiHa and HeLa cells. An increase in ROS production was observed at different times of treatment of cells with patuletin and patulitrin. Scanning electron microscopy showed morphological changes in SiHa and HeLa cells. Thus, compounds isolated from T. patulahave great treatment potential against cervical cancer.

El cáncer constituye una enfermedad paradigmática para el estudio de la adaptación humana ante los problemas de salud, según la Organización Mundial de la Salud es una de las principales causas de muerte en todo el mundo, y es considerada un problema de salud pública a escala mundial. Objetivo: Describir el cuidado cultural de mujeres con cáncer de mama en su contexto domiciliario atendidos en un Hospital de III nivel. Metodología: Estudio cualitativo, con diseño etnográfico. La muestra conformada por 11 mujeres, determinada por técnica de saturación y redundancia. Para la recolección de datos se usó la entrevista etnográfica y la observación participante, registrándose en el diario de campo. Se tuvo en cuenta los criterios de rigor científico y los principios de bioética personalista. Resultados: Emergieron 3 temas culturales: A. Los remedios caseros y una alimentación adecuada, alternativas importantes para combatir el cáncerde mama. B. Cuidado cultural en el tratamiento de los principales efectos adversos de la quimioterapia. C. La espiritualidad como cuidado cultural para afrontar el cáncer de mama. Conclusiones: El cuidado de las mujeres con cáncer de mama en el contexto domiciliario determina patrones de cuidado que inciden culturalmente y reflejan su cuidado en el domicilio. La investigación desde lo cultural, fortalece la práctica de enfermería porque potencia un campo natural de cuidado para brindar cuidado congruente culturalmente.Descriptores: Cáncer de mama, enfermería transcultural, cuidados de enfermería en elhogar, cultura, mujer.
