Vehicle Distance Measurement Method of Two-Way Two-Lane Roads Based on Monocular Vision

Abstract: The longitudinal distance between the vehicle and the forward vehicle, as well as the longitudinal distance between the vehicle and the opposite vehicle, is the main risk factor of overtaking behavior on two-way two-lane roads. Accurate measurement of these distances is the basis and key to automatic driving technology of two-way two-lane roads. In order to measure these longitudinal distances and improve the ranging accuracy, a vehicle distance measurement method of two-way two-lane roads based on monocular v… Show more

“…In binocular vision, the calibration process of the binocular camera actually determines the relationship between the position of each point in the physical world and the position of the pixel in the two-dimensional image [27]. According to this conversion process, the conversion relationship of any object in space from the world coordinate system to the pixel coordinate system can be obtained, as shown in Formula (9).…”

“…In contrast, monocular vision only requires a single camera, enabling implementation through the pinhole imaging principle, resulting in lower costs and convenient operation [18,19]. The commonly used methods for monocular vision positioning include the Perspective-n-Point (PNP) method [20], the 2 of 14 imaging model method [21], the data regression modeling method [22], and the geometric relationship method [23]. The imaging model method achieves positioning based on a similar triangle relationship and is typically utilized for forward vehicle positioning in the transportation field but is not suitable for directional shifts of water surface targets.…”

“…The experiment's lateral inaccuracy was within 0.3 m, while its error within 60 m was within 10%. Yang [27] proposed a vehicle distance measurement method for two-way lanes with an average inaccuracy of 3.15% within 60 m by combining the YOLOv5 algorithm and the geometric relation method. By combining the YOLOv3 algorithm with binocular vision, Fu [28] developed an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) ranging method, and the experimental results demonstrate that the measured relative error may reach a minimum of 2.54%.…”
