Vein of Galen aneurysm: Anatomical study of an adult autopsy case

Abstract: We present a case of vein of Galen aneurysmal malformation in an adult, the rupture of which caused a fatal hemorrhage. Macroscopic examination, together with plastination of specimen with S10, and microscopic examination showed connection of the aneurysm with the right thalamoperforating artery and, bilaterally, with the posterior choroidal and mesencephalic arteries. Histology also showed thinning of the aneurysmal wall, due to marked reduction of the muscular media at the point of rupture, and its connectio… Show more

“…It is less common for choroidal‐type GPAVFs to manifest as hydrocephalus in adults (Abe et al, ; Kleindienst et al, ; Alami and Maaroufi, ) than during the neonatal period. Adult presentations characteristically include headache, intracranial/subarachnoid hemorrhage (Porzionato et al, ), and seizures, with hydrocephalus (Hoffman et al, ; Fernandez et al, ; Black and Farhat, ) complicating only approximately one third of cases. Headache in patients with VGAMs could indicate hemorrhage with meningeal irritation/intracranial hypertension, or simply distention of the VG (Gold et al, ).…”

“…The study of the vessels of the brain base is one of our fields of research (De Caro et al, 1990, 1991, 1995, 1996, 1998, 2000Porzionato et al, 2004;Macchi et al, 2005;Parenti et al, 2005). We studied the PICA on 40 autoptic brains , and we were able to analyze the origin and the whole course of 80 PICAs, with reference to the five segments described by Lister et al (1982), which were recognizable on both sides.…”
