Veins along the course of the sciatic nerve

Abstract: Reflux is the most common pathology of the sciatic and tibial nerve veins which produces significant symptoms along the distribution of the nerves. Treatment of the varicosities offers significant relief while recurrence or residual varicosities are easily managed.

“…Of those 21 patients, 17 were women and 15 had at least two pregnancies. 8 The presence of pain and tingling at the area of nerve veins varicosities were found in 19 limbs. 8 The treatment of veins along those nerves has been recommended whenever they are symptomatic.…”

“…Normal veins in or around the sciatic nerve are not visualized using US because of their small size. Incompetency of the veins along the sciatic nerve causes dilatation of the veins, which in turn produces symptoms and signs related to sciatic nerve irritation in addition to those resulting from chronic venous insufficiency (27). Endovenous thermal ablation of these varicose veins, although it would not be possible due to their tortuous anatomy, should be considered as a contraindication because thermal energy may damage the adjacent sciatic nerve.…”

“…For example, veins of pelvic origin that communicate with the lower-extremity veins, the vein of the popliteal fossa, the thigh extension of the SSV, and the sciatic nerve veins are best seen in the standing position. 5,[8][9][10] The hydrostatic pressure is at the highest level and therefore the valvular function is challenged in a more physiologic manner.…”
