Venous and Arterial Bypass Grafts for Difficult Tumors, Aneurysms, and Occlusive Vascular Lesions: Evolution of Surgical Treatment and Improved Graft Results

Abstract: OBJECTIVE: In the treatment of patients with cranial base tumors, unclippable aneurysms, or medically intractable ischemia, it may be necessary to use high-flow bypass grafts. The indications, surgical techniques and complications are discussed. METHODS: During a 10-year period, 99 saphenous vein grafts and 3 radial artery grafts were performed for 101 patients, i.e., 72 with neoplasms, 23 with aneurysms, and 6 with ischemia. Clinical follow-up monitoring of the patients was by direct examination or telephone … Show more

“…Since 1967, great advances have been established in the microneurosurgical treatment of skull base lesions as well as in the microneurosurgi cal techniques of navigation through aquatic cisternal corridors for surgical access and treatment of lesions in various compartments of the CNS. 2,19,86,116,117,[119][120][121][122][123]125,126,128,[130][131][132][133][134][135]138 It is most enjoyable and satisfying to tour the numer ous simple but fully equipped microsurgical laboratories in the neurosurgical departments of the world. However, everywhere they are underused.…”
