Venous pseudo-aneurysm as a late complication of short-term central venous catheterisation

Abstract: Complications following central venous catheterisation abound in the medical literature. This reflects the under-estimated potential hazards associated with this procedure as well as an increase in the number of such procedures performed in high-risk patients. We report on a case where a venous pseudo-aneurysm developed four months after the removal of a short-term central venous catheter in a moderately high-risk patient.

“…Although the relation of the IJV varies, the use of the apex of Sedillot's triangle combined with the use of ultrasound could lower the risk of puncturing the wrong vessel, whilst malpositioning of the catheter could greatly be reduced (Luckraz, 2003;Schummer et al, 2003). The exact location, size, and potency of the IJV can be determined with the use of ultrasonography, already routinely utilized by many medical institutions, as this can reduce possible complications (Conz et al, 1997).…”

“…Arterial pseudo-aneurisms have also been reported to occur during CVC into the IJV as a result of puncturing of the CCA or the thyrocervical trunk (Luckraz, 2003;Schummer et al, 2003). Venous pseudo-aneurisms are also a possible occurrence following multiple attempts at puncturing the same vein (Chudhari et al, 1998).…”
