Venous thromboembolic risk stratification in pediatric trauma: A Pediatric Trauma Society Research Committee multicenter analysis

Abstract: BACKGROUND:Venous thromboembolism (VTE) in injured children is rare, but its consequences are significant. Several risk stratification algorithms for VTE in pediatric trauma exist with little consensus, and all are hindered in development by relying on registry data with known inaccuracies. We performed a multicenter review to evaluate trauma registry fidelity and confirm the effectiveness of one established algorithm across diverse centers. METHODS:Local trauma registries at 10 institutions were queried for a… Show more

“…Several factors limit these results. Our VTE prediction algorithm was developed from NTDB data, the use of which has well-described drawbacks 12 . We have recently validated the algorithm via institutional trauma registry review and direct chart investigation with controls, but the retrospective nature of these data remains a limitation 12 .…”

We have recently validated the algorithm via institutional trauma registry review and direct chart investigation with controls, but the retrospective nature of these data remains a limitation 12 . In addition, existing VTE prediction algorithms are based on the risk of symptomatic VTE, which we have demonstrated underestimates the risk of all VTE 4,15 .…”
