Venous Thromboembolism in Cancer Patients

Abstract: Cancer-associated thrombosis is a common problem. As we begin to better understand the risk factors and biomarkers for cancer-associated VTE, we can further refine and develop risk-assessment models to determine those patients who would most likely benefit from anticoagulation. While LMWH products are generally preferred in cancer-related VTE, more research will continue to evolve our understanding of treatment and thrombopprophylaxis in cancer-associated VTE.

“…Deficiency of protein C, protein S and antithrombin and factor V Leiden mutation and prothrombin 20210A gene variant are genetic risk factors for DVT [19]. In addition, diseases such as IBD [20], CKD [8], SLE [21] and cancer [22] are commonly associated with an increased risk for clot formation.…”

“…This could have had an impact on both severity and mortality in our cohort. Research studies in such populations, including patients with active cancer, deserves specific attention [33][34][35]. Lastly, although we attempted to ascertain the cause of death in all patients, we were unable to establish this for the majority of patients, a difficulty that we share with most other European settings.…”
