Venous thromboembolism in Croatia – Croatian Cooperative Group for Hematologic Diseases (CROHEM) study

Abstract: AimTo analyze the incidence and characteristics of venous thromboembolism (VTE) in Croatia.MethodsThe Croatian Cooperative Group for Hematologic Diseases conducted an observational non-interventional study in 2011. Medical records of patients with newly diagnosed VTE hospitalized in general hospitals in 4 Croatian counties (Šibenik-Knin, Koprivnica-Križevci, Brod-Posavina, and Varaždin County) were reviewed. “…Our study found no vaccine related adverse effect of thrombosis, in contrast to a latest single study obtained from a study by Pulanić et al from Croatia that found an elevation in the incidence of mixed pulmonary embolism (PE) and deep venous thrombosis (DVT), but not extracted PE or extracted DVT [41] Pandemic lockdowns and restrictions on physical activity were postulated to be the cause [42].…”

“…VTE is a multicausal disease with many interactions between diff erent acquired (immobilization, surgery, trauma, cancer, autoimmune disorders, pregnancy, oral contraceptive use, long distance airplane fl ight, etc.) and inherited prothrombotic factors (FV Leiden and FII 20210A mutations, defi ciencies of protein C, S and antithrombin, and elevations of procoagulant factors) 8 . Although it is in general a frequent disease, VTE is rare among young people; the incidence of VTE is less than 5 fi rst-time VTE per 100,000 per year among people younger than 15 years but increases sharply to 450-600 per 100,000 per year among people aged 80 years or older 1,3,5,8 .…”
