“…This finding supports the modulation of medullary baroreflex circuitry by supramedullary regions within the midbrain and diencephalon [67]. These regions are recruited during emotional/psychological stresses [33,68] to provide excitatory inputs into the rostral ventromedial [62] and ventrolateral medullary neurons regulating heart and vasomotion [50,68]. These overactivated central regions express a2-adrenoreceptors and I1 imidazoline receptors, which are targets for the centrally acting antihypertensives [69,70] being assessed in the present study.…”

“…Hence, a more intense stimulus of an air-jet may recruit other areas besides those controlling vasomotion [58]. Since inhibition of raphe pallidus neurons, comprised within rostral ventromedial medulla, attenuates the tachycardia induced by air-jet [59], by hypothalamic [60,61] and midbrain stimulations [62], it is worth hypothesizing the modulation of cardiac sympathetic premotor neurons of raphe pallidus by centrally acting drugs. This hypothesis is supported by the study of Madden and coworkers, which showed attenuation of hypothalamic stimulation-induced tachycardia by CL injection into raphe regions [63].…”

“…However, future experimental research is needed to confirm this hypothesis. In addition, it has been claimed that sympathetic activity is modulated by the bidirectional connection of PAG to the hypothalamus, specially DMH, 39,[45][46][47] and hence alterations in cardiovascular activity by NO may be innervated by indirect pathways such as the dmPAG-DMH-RVLM-spinal cord pathway.…”

“…Wird das laterale periaquäduktale Grau (PAG) stimuliert, so stellen sich Verteidigungsverhaltensreaktionen und eine Erhöhung der Herzleistung und des Blutdrucks ein [62]. Das periaquäduktale Grau sendet monosynaptische Projektionen zu Neuronen des Raphe pallidus (Raphe-Kerne im Hirnstamm) [63]. Das Raphe-pallidus-Neuron kontrolliert kardiale Antworten, die vom PAG evoziert werden [63].…”
