“…Puumala virus (PUUV) harbored by the bank vole Myodes glareolus (Clethrionomys glareolus) was identified as the causative agent of NE, a less severe form of HFRS (Brummer-Korvenkontio et al, 1980). All these Microtus-associated hantaviruses seem to have no or little pathogenic potential in humans (Vapalahti et al, 1996b;Schultze et al, 2002;Clement et al, 2003;Ulrich et al, 2004). Interestingly, PHV-related hantaviruses were identified in other Microtus species in North America, e.g., Isla Vista virus in Microtus californicus, and in Europe, for example, Tula virus in M. arvalis and M. levis (synonym M. rossiaemeridionalis; Plyusnin et al, 1994;Sibold et al, 1995;Song et al, 1995).…”

“…In Germany, most NE cases are due to autochthonous PUUV infections. This is reflected in results of large-scale seroepidemiological studies as well as in the number of NE cases recorded since the introduction of the German Federal Protection against Infection Act in 2001 [24,25]. The increased number of cases observed in 2005 (447 cases), in 2007 (1,688 cases) and in 2010 (2,016 cases) were caused by PUUV outbreaks mainly affecting Baden-Wuerttemberg, Bavaria, North Rhine Westphalia and Lower Saxony (Robert Koch-Institut: SurvStat, http://www3.rki.de/SurvStat, 16th March 2011; [26][27][28]).…”

“…Since 2001, human hantavirus infections have been notifiable in Germany and a total of 10,403 cases were recorded until December 2016 (Robert Koch Institute: SurvStat@RKI 2.0, https://survstat.rki.de , data status: 31.12.2016). The geographical distribution of human cases in Germany is heterogeneous, with the majority reported from highly endemic regions in southern, western and north-western Germany [ 5 , 14 16 ]. In outbreak years, the number of human NE cases rises to about 2000 in Germany (SurvStat@RKI 2.0, https://survstat.rki.de , data status: 17.05.2016).…”
