Verification and further study on method of measuring contact force between mortise and tenon joint

Abstract: This work verified the direct measuring method of the contact force and its relaxation behavior between mortise and tenon joints through withdrawal load resistance testing of T-shaped mortise-and-tenon joint specimens. Further, it also studied the influence of wood species, beech (Fagus orientalis Lipsky) and Mongolian Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris var. mongolica), interference fitness (0.1, 0.2, 0.3, and 0.4 mm; 0.2, 0.4, 0.6, and 0.8 mm), and wood grain orientation (radial, diagonal, and tangential) on the co… Show more

“…Traditional mortise-and-tenon (M&T) joints are widely used in wooden furniture frames (Erdil et al 2005;Wu et al 2020). Previous investigations conducted found several critical factors influencing the service life of M&T joints, e.g., moisture, wood species, adhesive type, heat treatment, tenon size, and tenon geometry (Likos et al 2012;Hajdarevic and Martinovic 2014;Zhou et al 2018;Yan et al 2020;Liu et al 2019;Yang and Liu 2020;Zhou et al 2020;Fu et al 2021a;Yin and Liu 2021;Wu et al 2021).…”

“…Round tenon is widely used in structures of traditional wood furniture and modern panel furniture due to its advantages of wood savings and its simple structure [4][5][6][7] . However, basic properties of wood, which is a natural polymeric biomaterial, inevitably deteriorate with age due to natural and human intervention; as a result, the mechanical properties of the mortise and tenon joints deteriorate, ultimately affecting the safety of the overall structure [8][9][10][11][12] . Structural strength of furniture products is the basis for realizing product functions; therefore, it is crucial to investigate the mechanical properties of mortise and tenon joints for the safety of solid wood furniture [13][14][15][16][17] .…”

“…As a natural composite material, wood has been widely used in engineering fields including wood constructions and wood products [1][2][3][4]. Compared with other engineering structure materials, such as steel rods and cement concrete, wood has the advantages of being environmental friendly [5,6] and having easy processing [7], good decoration [8][9][10][11][12] and an early warning system before failure [13,14].…”
