Verification and validation of ICME methods and models for aerospace applications

Abstract: Integrated Computational Materials Engineering (ICME) model verification and validation (V&V) is difficult because materials processing, microstructural evolution, and property development contain a rich mix of length and time scales with an equally complex set of interacting phenomena and mechanisms. Beyond these difficulties, engineers who adapt these models rarely generate independent validation data sets to confirm model adequacy, quantify uncertainty, and identify potential error sources. Even when a vali… Show more

“…The TRL scale was originally developed by NASA in the 1980s and has since been implemented and modified for multiple applications and technologies including the assessment of software solutions [85,86]. ICME verification and validation procedures are also standardized to achieve high TRL levels [87]. As discussed above, micromodels have been validated to predict porosities and melt pool dimensions reliably for different materials, different AM processes and different commercial machines.…”

“…Tool assessments were performed to obtain maturity level (TML), as described by Cowles et al [17], for each of the ICME computer codes in the framework. For micro-models, the maturity was estimated at four to five.…”

“…The rationale and approach for developing these guidelines and practitioner aides were described in a journal article in 2012 [2]. The initial versions of the recommended best practice, practitioner aides such as V&V checklists, a Tool Maturity Level (TML) assessment approach, and a recommended approach to assess risk vs. consequences of ICME application were appended as additional files accessible through the IMMI journal reference.…”
