Verification of Euler/Navier–Stokes codes using the method of manufactured solutions

Abstract: SUMMARYThe method of manufactured solutions is used to verify the order of accuracy of two ÿnite-volume Euler and Navier-Stokes codes. The Premo code employs a node-centred approach using unstructured meshes, while the Wind code employs a similar scheme on structured meshes. Both codes use Roe's upwind method with MUSCL extrapolation for the convective terms and central di erences for the di usion terms, thus yielding a numerical scheme that is formally second-order accurate. The method of manufactured solutio… Show more

“…MMS has been applied to the Euler equations, which govern the flow of an inviscid (frictionless) fluid [19]. The two-dimensional, steady-state form of the Euler equations is given by where arbitrary source terms f are included on the right-hand side, and e t is the specific total energy, which for a calorically perfect gas is given by The manufactured solution for this case is chosen as The subscripts here refer to constants (not differentiation) with the same units as the variable, and the dimensionless a constants generally vary between 0.5 and 1.5 to provide smooth solutions over an L×L square domain.…”

“…Manufactured solutions of many complex flow problems have been reported. For example compressible flow with invicid Euler equation and laminar Navier-Stokes equation (Roy et al (2004)), incompressible turbulent flow modeled by the Reynolds Averaged Navier-Stokes equations (Eca et al (2007(Eca et al ( , 2012), flow with heat transfer (Pelletier & Roache (2009)), etc. To the authors' knowledge, there are only a few manufactured solutions for fluid-structure interaction problems ).…”

“…MMS has been used to verify two compressible CFD codes 7 : Premo 8 (developed by Sandia National Laboratories) and WIND 9 (developed by the NPARC alliance). In this work, the authors successfully verified both the inviscid Euler equations and the laminar Navier-Stokes equations; however, this study employed only Cartesian grids.…”
