Abstract: Many taxa secrete chemicals to avoid predation. The Japanese blue-lined octopus Hapalochlaena cf. fasciata has high levels of potent lethal tetrodotoxin (TTX) in the muscles and skin; thus, it has been hypothesized that TTX is a defense mechanism.
