The dependability characteristic of the control software of manufacturing systems is highlighted more than before, going through repeated changes to cope with various and varying requirements. Formal methods are researched to be applied to automation system engineering to obtain a more effective and efficient quality assurance. One of the approaches, a formal specification language named Generalised Test Tables has been developed with the aim of intuitiveness and accessibility for automation application developers. The result of the experiments conducted to assess the usability of this language is presented here. Focussing on evaluating effectiveness and user satisfaction, three paper-based experiments have been conducted with students at the bachelor and master level. The evaluation results point to positive usability in both comparative effectiveness to conventional language, that is, Petri Nets, and subjective perception of user satisfaction.This is an open access article under the terms of the Creative Commons Attribution License, which permits use, distribution and reproduction in any medium, provided the original work is properly cited.

This study presents a formal description and verification method of the ontology transformation process of the distribution network information model based on the meta-model theory. By defining the dynamic change structures and model mapping constraints of the ontology transformation process of distribution network, a formalised specification for describing the key attributes of model updating and model mapping processes was constructed. The model updating and model mapping instances were specified using model checking verification tool SPIN. The method fundamentally guarantees the standardisation and reliability of the model ontology transformation process achieved by the meta-model.

Detections of different thermal problems resort to approaches that utilize different indices, respectively. From an engineering viewpoint, they are neither flexible in detecting multiple thermal problems nor flexible in dealing with new concerned thermal problems. This article proposes a multiple-conformance approach to requirements that modelled by hybrid automata for flexibly detecting temperature anomalies. Temperature anomalies could lead to thermal problems, i.e., thermal discomfort as well as serious health problems. This approach extended a conventional conformance approach. The flexibility of the proposal is reflected in two aspects. First, it is an integrated approach that can deal with multiple thermal problems at different states of hybrid automata. Second, we can devise conformance relations concerning new thermal problems, and add them to the multiple-conformance approach. Experimental results show the feasibility and high performance of our proposal in detecting indoor temperature anomalies comprehensively.
