Vermicompost priming stimulated germination and seedling emergence of onion seeds against abiotic stresses

Abstract: The present study elucidates the effect of matrix priming with vermicompost (VCP) on germination and seedling emergence of two onion seed lots under drought, salt and temperature stress conditions. Seeds treated with water was considered as hydropriming (HP) and untreated (NP) seeds were taken as control. Treated and untreated seeds were exposed to different levels of drought (10 and 15% PEG), salt (50 and 100 mM NaCl) and temperature (30 and 35°C) stresses. Priming with vermicompost improved the perfo… Show more

“…But the success of seed priming depends on plant genotype/specie, environmental conditions, seed vigor and priming technique being employed to improve seed germination (Adhikari et al, 2022). Solid Matrix Priming Among the several priming methods, Solid matrix priming is an important priming method for repairing aging and improving seed quality (Muhie et al, 2020a). SMP technique proposed by Eastin (1990) involves combination of seed, solid matrix and water to control temperature, oxygen and moisture that affect germination.…”

“…Among the various organic amendments practices, VC and VW are low-cost techniques to reduce the detrimental impact of salts on plants ( Table 1 , [ 53 ]). The VC has been shown to reduce salt toxicity and enhance the emergence rate and seedling growth of different plants [ 54 , 55 ]. The VC enhances soil organic matter in salt soils by decreasing electrical conductivity (EC), bulk density and increasing field capacity, saturated hydraulic conductivity, and cation exchange capacity [ 56 ].…”

“…The soil amendment of VC increased exchangeable K + , Ca 2+ , and Mg 2+ , plant height, total dry matter content, and decreased exchangeable Na + in the saline soil [ 63 , 64 , 65 ]. In addition, VC application reduced salt-induced injuries of plants grown in saline soil by increasing relative water content, stomatal conductance, chlorophyll-a, superoxide dismutase (SOD), ascorbate peroxidase (APX), and catalase (CAT) activities and decreased electrolyte leakage and malondialdehyde (MDA) levels [ 55 , 66 , 67 , 68 ].…”

“…Various crop seed priming agents have been explored for abiotic and biotic stress tolerance. In onions, vermicompost seed priming enhanced germination, and healthy plants withstood drought, salinity, and temperature stresses (Muhie et al, 2020 ). This was due to the improved activities of enzymes such as catalase, superoxide dismutase, and ascorbate peroxidase.…”
