Minimum energy consumption and economic efficiency using local and recyclable materials is essential for achieving sustainability, considering the depletion of global energy sources. The Anatolian Peninsula presents a diverse range of local building construction techniques accumulated over centuries, which meet the criteria mentioned above. Due to richness of climatic variety and the influence of many civilisations throughout history, Anatolian regions reflect this richness in their respective solutions to building construction. Built mainly out of brick and stone, mortared and plastered by mud, the domed vernacular houses of Harran, a small town in the province of Urfa in the hot arid climate of southeastern Anatolia, are one of the best examples that deserve attention with respect to minimum energy consumption. In this study, the thermal performance of the ''Harran house'' as a vernacular type was analysed. For this purpose, temperatures inside and outside a Harran house complex with relative humidity variations were measured. In addition, for investigating the domed houses' thermal behaviour, temperature measurements at different surfaces and media were recorded. The solar chimney effect obtained from the dome and the importance of the thermal mass of the square base of the house were also evaluated. The study yielded results, which showed that the indoor conditions were within the limits for thermal comfort even under extreme summer conditions.

Orta Doğu'daki geleneksel yaşam alanları, binlerce yıllık mimari birikimin ürünleridir. Aşırı sıcak iklimle başa çıkmak için geliştirilen mimari ürünler, bu birikim içerisinde önemli bir yer tutmaktadır. Antik dönemlerden beri mekânları havalandırmak ve soğutmak için geliştirilen rüzgâr yakalayıcılar, bu birikim içinde en çok dikkat çeken örnekler arasındadır. Bu çalışmada amaç, Şanlıurfa'daki rüzgâr yakalayıcıların (badgeller) ayakta kalan örneklerini tanıtmak, belgelemek ve korunmada öncelikli olanlarını vurgulamaktır. Çalışma kapsamında öncelikle ilgili alanyazın taranmış ve görüşme tekniği kullanılarak rüzgâr yakalayıcılar hakkında kullanıcılardan bilgi toplanmıştır. Daha sonra, geniş bir alan çalışması kapsamında Şanlıurfa'daki rüzgâr yakalayıcıları çizim ve fotoğraflar ile belgelenmiştir. Alan çalışması sonucunda, Şanlıurfa'daki geleneksel evlerin sadece üçünde rüzgâr yakalayıcıların özgün yapısının korunduğu belirlenmiştir. Bunların dışında, üç evde ve bir savunma yapısında bulunan, orijinal yapısı ya da işlevselliği bozulmuş olan rüzgâr yakalayıcılar da çalışma kapsamında sunulmuştur. Rüzgâr yakalayıcıların, evlerde sadece eyvan birimini havalandırdığı saptanmıştır. Savunma yapısındaki rüzgâr yakalayıcının ise bir odayı havalandırdığı belirlenmiştir. Ayrıca diğer örneklerdeki havalandırma elemanlarından biçim olarak farklı olan özgün bir havalandırma elemanı da bu çalışma kapsamında belirlenmiştir.

Contribution/ Originality: This study contributes to find the balance between the environment, and sustainability. This study has illustrated how the vernacular domed houses of Harran simply and admirably correspond to hot and cold environments as well as a comfortable living environment which is both cost-effective and humanitarian. In addition, in terms of ecology, all these traditional materials have low environmental impact in their production, reusability and even natural dissolution.
