“…When NaF was added to fill the voids in the crystal structure of a ZrF 4 -BaF 2 phase, the mixture of ZrF 4 -BaF 2 -NaF-NdF 3 system was unexpectedly a glass. One year later, the first description of "fluorozirconate" glasses was produced with additional vitreous compositions [29]. ZBLAN glass, referring to a mixture of ZrF 4 -BaF 2 -LaF 3 -AlF 3 -NaF with a molar composition of 53% ZrF 4 , 20% BaF 2 , 4% LaF 3 , 3% AlF 3 , and 20% NaF, considered as the most stable glass practical for optical fiber applications, was reported first by Ohsawa et al of the Furukawa Electic Co. in 1981 [30].…”

“…This can be simply explained by Hooke's law using the twomass spring model [6]. In general, non-silica glasses, such as tellurite (TeO 2 based), fluoride (typically ZrF 4 or AlF 3 based), and chalcogenide (chalcogen S, Se, Te based) glasses [7][8][9], possess excellent optical transparence in the wavelength range of 0.5-5μm, 0.4-6μm and 1-16μm respectively and thus are attractive candidates as fiber materials for mid-infrared applications over the conventional silica. The latter shows inferior transparence beyond 2μm, due to (i) the strong fundamental vibration hydroxyl absorption at 2.7µm and (ii) high loss (>50dB/m) starting from 3µm due to the tail of the multi-phonon absorption of Si-O network.…”
