Verrucous Carcinoma of the Ear

Abstract: A case report of verrucous carcinoma in the ear of a patient subject to persistent discharge from that ear for more than 30 years is presented. The histology conformed to that in Ackerman's classic description and a literature search revealed that this is only the second case of this disease reported. The patient was treated surgically followed by radiotherapy and was well 18 months later.

“…Although more current reports do not indicate that adjuvant radiation incurs increased risk of dedifferentiation, there are very few reports that describe treated cases of verrucous carcinoma of the temporal bone [3,[16][17][18][19][20][21][22][23][24]. We present the 15th patient with this disease described in the English literature.…”

“…The presence of submucous fibrosis and leukoplakia are associated with poor outcomes [15]. Verrucous carcinoma extremely rarely involves the temporal bone, and only 14 cases have been reported in literature [3,[16][17][18][19][20][21][22][23][24]. Because so few cases of verrucous carcinoma involving the middle ear and temporal bone have been described, there is no consensus on the best course of treatment for these lesions.…”

“…1 Verrucous carcinoma has been reported in almost all anatomic sites in the head and neck, including uncommon sites such as the orbit, 2 middle ear, [3][4][5] and temporal bone. 6 The incidence varies from 4.5% to 9%, and elderly men are most often afflicted.…”

“…After the treatment of the antimicrotubule drug vinblastine, the patient got a better prognosis. In Proops et al’s report,14 5-fluorouracil and mitomycin C were used to treat the patient. Although no recent reports of recurrence (18 months), this case lacks longer follow-up data.…”
