Verrucous Carcinoma of the Oral Cavity: A Histopathologic Study of 10 Japanese Cases

Abstract: Objective To reports ten Japanese surgical cases of verrucous carcinoma (VC) of the oral cavity. Study design The author reviewed histopathology of 10 cases of oral VC. Results Ten cases of oral VC were found in our pathology department in the last 10 years. During the 10 years, a total of 187 cases of oral malignancy were recognized. Therefore, the frequency of VC was 5.3% of all oral malignancies. The patients consisted of six women and four men. The age ranged from 52 to 84 years with a median of 68 years. … Show more

“…The expression of p53 protein and Ki-67 antigen in VC has been reported [13,14,15,16,17]. The present case showed p53 protein in all VCs and squamous lesions, and its expression was accentuated in the basal cells of VC and in all the layers of the squamous lesions.…”

“…These tumors grow locally, with lymph node and distant metastases rarely observed. Verrucous carcinomas are papillomatous or calculiform polypoid lesions, with club-shaped growth of well-differentiated epithelium [10][11][12]. These tumors are rare on the tongue [18].…”

“…Many tumors occur on the lateral borders of the tongue, whereas their occurrence on the tip of the tongue is rare [6][7][8][9]. Moreover, oral squamous cell carcinomas rarely show pedunculated and tuberous growth, although oral verrucous carcinoma are a distinct type of squamous cell carcinoma [6,[10][11][12][13].…”

“…Immunohistochemical studies of high-molecular weight CKs and p40/p63 supported SCC characters of the present case. [17,20,21] The carcinoma cells were continuous with epidermis, and showed high cellular anaplasia including monster-like bizarre cells. No apparent lympho-vascular permeation was seen.…”

“…The positive expressions of p63 and p40 highly suggest that the carcinoma is SCC. [17,20,21] Negative p53 suggested no mutations of the p53 gene. [22] The high Ki-67 LI (98%) suggests that the carcinoma has a very high cell proliferative activity [23,24] and the prognosis is not good.…”
