Versatile Anion–π Interactions between Halides and a Conformationally Rigid Bis(tetraoxacalix[2]arene[2]triazine) Cage and Their Directing Effect on Molecular Assembly

Abstract: Interactive halides: Bis(tetraoxacalix[2]arene[2]triazine), a conformationally rigid cage molecule of three V‐shaped electron‐deficient clefts, forms 1:1 complexes with fluoride (361 M−1), chloride (146 M−1) and bromide (95 M−1) in acetonitrile. Different anion–π interactions along with multiple hydrogen bonding, halogen bonding and lone‐pair‐electrons–π interactions directed the formation of different molecular assemblies (an example is shown here).

“…52,53,148 They were able to observe binding constants up to 4000 M −1 in acetonitrile. Crystallographic studies revealed the interaction of the anions with the electron-deficient triazine moiety, and more recently amphiphiles based on the tetraoxacalix[2]arene[2]-triazine scaffold show size-selective self-assembly into vesicles controlled by the presence of anions in the order 55,149 In 2012, Wang and co-workers decorated the tetraoxacalix[2]arene[2]triazine macrocycles with pentafluorophenyl groups (52a and 52b) ( Figure 63) for anion−π interactions in solution.…”

“…In the decaaza‐cyclophane, additional anion‐exchange sites may occur if the nitrogen groups are protonated. On the other hand, the electron‐deficient triazine ring incorporated into a conformational rigid host can form various anion–π complexes . In this case, we envisioned that the newly bonded phase had better separation selectivity for anions.…”
