Vertical bone augmentation with titanium granule blocks in rabbit calvaria

Abstract: To determine whether it is possible to vertically augment bone utilizing a block graft from compressed titanium granules mainly used previously for contained bone defects and to determine whether there exists a difference in osteoconductive properties between the white and the grey granules. In 11 rabbits, 4 titanium blocks were inserted on each rabbit's skull bone according to a randomized scheme. These blocks were made from standardized compressed titanium granules. Type A: PTG grey, small granules (Pourus T… Show more

“…For vertical bone augmentation, block-type scaffolds are considered favorable, because they facilitate shape forming and maintain the handleability, which are difficult when granular scaffolds are used. Various block-type scaffolds have been reported; 25,26] however, their ability for vertical bone augmentation is limited, and they need a combination of bone morphogenetic protein (BMP), [26][27][28] growth factors, 29] and stem and/or progenitor cells for favorable outcomes. [30][31][32][33][34] These combination approaches have several limitations, including severe swelling, cyst-like tissue formation, high cost, osteoclastic bone resorption, cumbersome procedures, and/or invasive manipulation requiring a minimum of two surgeries.…”

“…Porous titanium granules were first used in Orthopedics [2,3] and then began to be applied in Dentistry [4,13,14]. Porous titanium granules have been studied in postextraction sockets [7,[15][16][17], maxillary sinus augmentation [4,6,[18][19][20][21], peri-implant defects [9,10,[22][23][24][25][26], supracrestal vertical bone augmentation [27], and periodontal defects [23,28]. ey have been studied in various animal models, such as rabbits [5,6,8,27], dogs [3,7,9,15,16], sheep [11], and mini-pigs [10,17,28], and humans as well [4, 13, 14, 18, 19, 21-26, 29, 30].…”
