Vertical Transport Timescale of Surface‐Produced Particulate Material in the Chesapeake Bay

Abstract: Accumulation and remineralization of surface‐produced particulate organic matter (POM) in the water column and seabed link closely to hypoxia and the health of aquatic ecosystems. The POM retention time provides a key timescale to interpret biochemical reaction processes. In this study, we investigated the spatiotemporal variations in the vertical particulate age (VPA) of surface‐produced POM, which is the mean time elapsed since the particulates last contact the surface, by incorporating major physical proces… Show more

“…Yet, it is unlikely that low bottom DO is in response to enhanced bottom respiration alone nor surface blooms during MHW events. The timescales for both oxygen drawdown and vertical fluxes of organic matter from blooms (and subsequent respiration; Figure S7 in Supporting Information ) are on the order of months (Figure S8 in Supporting Information ; J. Xiong & Shen, 2022), though sinking rates do vary by phytoplankton community type (Spilling et al., 2018). Meanwhile, the average MHW in CB lasts ∼11 days (Mazzini & Pianca, 2022), a much shorter timescale.…”
