Vertical variations of rain intensity in different rainy periods in and around Bangladesh derived from TRMM observations

Abstract: ABSTRACT:In this paper, differences in rain intensity in and around Bangladesh during various rainy periods are described. The data were obtained from tropical rainfall measuring mission (TRMM) -2A25, -3B42 and -3B43. The version 5 (V5) 3B42 daily products overestimated rainfall in pre-monsoon and post-monsoon periods but underestimated it in the monsoon period compared with rain-gauge data. The version 6 (V6) daily products reduced the over-and underestimation of rainfall. On the basis of the analysed rainfal… Show more

“…This confirms that during monsoons, shallow convection and northeastward or northwestward propagating STSs (especially SWACs) dominate. Houze et al (2007) and Islam and Uyeda (2008) also noted the shallow convection systems during the monsoon period in this region.…”

“…It has been confirmed that deep convection and southeastward propagating ATSs are dominant in the premonsoon period. Islam and Uyeda (2008) and Kodama et al (2005) noted that deep convection systems prevail during the pre-monsoon period. The movement direction of monsoon systems toward the northeast or northwest is closely related to the seasonal average direction of low-level (850 hPa) wind (not shown).…”

“…The 2A25 data with 5 km horizontal and 250 m vertical sampling from surface to 20 km altitude is used in this study. The spatial distribution and vertical variation of rain intensities are analyzed similar to Islam and Uyeda (2008) for all the Nor'westers over Bangladesh that occurred between 28th April and 31st May of 2008. “…Over south Asia, precipitation characteristics change significantly with the seasons, with the dominance of deep convective precipitation during the pre-monsoon season, but the frequent occurrence of precipitation caused by stratiform and shallow convective clouds through the mature monsoon season (Kodama et al 2005;Islam and Uyeda 2008). Typically, there is also a well-defined diurnal variation in this region.…”
