Very Long-Term Outcome of Community-Dwelling Patients With Schizophrenia Spectrum Disorders in Rural Greece

Abstract: The objective of the present study was to measure the very long-term outcome in community-dwelling patients with a diagnosis of psychosis and to search for possible correlations of outcome with clinical factors. The sample included 55 psychotic patients with at least 15 years of disease duration (M = 32.1 years). For the estimation of the outcome, the Health of the Nations Outcome Scale and the Clinical Global Impression Scale were used. A total of 34.5% of the patients had a good outcome, whereas 27.3% had po… Show more

“…Another study suggested that the failure to achieve symptomatic remission was associated with worse functional outcomes (Haynes et al, 2012). This is also in line with the findings of a very recent study which demonstrated that symptomatology is related to the patients’ very long-term outcome, as estimated with the use of the Health of Nations Outcome Scale (HoNOS) (Peritogiannis, Grammeniati, Gogou, Gioti, & Mavreas, 2019). Functioning is an important component of patients’ outcome as it encompasses several aspects of a patient’s everyday living, such as social relationships, leisure activities and employment.…”

“…Finally, the measurement of other aspects of patients' outcome, such as psychopathology and functioning, were beyond the scope of this study. These issues have been recently addressed by other research by our team and results were encouraging (Peritogiannis et al, 2019;Peritogiannis & Nikolaou, 2020).…”

“…With the use of the Health of Nations Outcome Scale, it was found that 34.5% of patients had good outcome. Outcome was worse in patients living with other severely mentally ill family members (Peritogiannis et al, 2019). The most recent iHOPE-20 study has been conducted on an Irish incidence cohort of patients with a first episode of psychosis (FEP).…”

“…Long-term high-dose antipsychotic use and antipsychotic polypharmacy were associated with a poorer outcome and more severe social impairments in recent studies, but this finding may reflect treatment resistance and does not imply causality (Moilanen et al, 2016; Velthorst et al, 2017). Finally, patients with psychotic disorders who were members of families with other severe mentally ill members were found to have worst outcome (Peritogiannis et al, 2019).…”
