Very low-refractive-index optical thin films consisting of an array of SiO_2 nanorods

Abstract: The refractive-index contrast in dielectric multilayer structures, optical resonators, and photonic crystals is an important figure of merit that creates a strong demand for high-quality thin films with a low refractive index. A SiO2 nanorod layer with low refractive index of n = 1.08, to our knowledge the lowest ever reported in thin-film materials, is grown by oblique-angle electron-beam deposition of SiO2. A single-pair distributed Bragg reflector employing a SiO2 nanorod layer is demonstrated to have enhan… Show more

“…It is worth to note that the use of proposed nano-structure for media with such extreme magnitudes of optical constants is validated, for example, for antireflection of ferroelectrics and semiconductors in infrared and microwave regions where the creation of homogeneous coatings is complicated. Also, it is possible to create antireflection coating for artificial media with refractive index close to one [27]. According to general theory of antireflection coatings [24], the refractive index of antireflecting coating in this case should be even closer to the vacuum value that obviously does not allow to use any natural dielectric for these purposes.…”

“…These narrow band rugate filters have potential applications in laser applications and protective goggles. Colour AR coatings fabricated by magnetron sputtering have potential application in architecture and cement industry [96] . One can easily generate highly porous and different nanostructures by optimizing fabricating parameters.…”
