Very Rapid Preparation of SmI2 by Sonic Treatment of Iodoform and Metallic Samarium

Abstract: A very rapid preparation of SmI2 by sonication of a mixture of metallic samarium and iodoform in THF is described. To prove the synthetic applications of the obtained SmI2 several high‐yielding reactions were carried out. Preliminary results for the generation of SmI2 in THF by sonication from diiodomethane, 1,2‐diiodoethane, or iodine are also described. (© Wiley‐VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. “…4 Generally this reagent is synthesized by the oxidation of metallic samarium by 1,2‐diiodoethane in THF under an inert atmosphere 3. Molecular iodine5 or diiodomethane6 have also been used and, more recently, rapid preparations of SmI 2 in THF were described under sonication7, 8 or microwave irradiation 9. These recent improvements have indeed reduced the time of preparation significantly.…”

“…The solution of SmI 2 in THF (0.09 m) was prepared by a known procedure. [87] General procedure for fluorous solid-phase extraction (F-SPE): Water (2 mL) was added to a 5 g F-SPE cartridge, followed by the reaction mixture. The non-fluorous fraction was eluted with methanol/water, 4:1 (60 mL).…”

“…(7.15) Similarly, useful organometallic compounds such as NaSePh and lanthanides, such as SmI 2 , can be prepared by using sodium/benzophenone under sonication. SmI 2 can be synthesized from metal Sm and CHI 3 in dry THF under sonication, and directly used for an organic reaction [18]. SmI 3 is obtained in 5 min from metal Sm and iodine I 2 in tetrahydrofuran (THF) by using a simple ultrasonic cleaner.…”
